Second Activity for 5-6 grades

-    Read the section of the workbook containing testimonies of survivors who were children before the Holocaust. (These testimonies also appear at the end of this booklet.)
-    Hold a class discussion about the various ways in which Polish Jews lived before the war -- places of residence, livelihood, education, tradition, relations with countries of origin, relations with the majority population -- and make reference to the stories collected by the students.

Duration of activity in class: one lesson

Third Activity for 5-6 Grades

Begin the lesson with a background talk on how World War 11 began, how Poland was occupied, and the Germans' policies toward Jews in Poland. Then ask the students to read the testimonies in their workbook on the period following the German conquest of Poland.

Ask each student to select one testimony, re-read the testimony of the survivor on the period preceding the occupation, and answer the following questions:

1.   What changes occurred in the life of the child and his/her family when the occupation began, and how did he/she respond to these changes?

2.   Is there an element in the witness's account that gave you an especially strong impression? What is it, and wh does it impress you?

The teacher may ask the entire class to discuss the students' answers.

Duration of activity in class: one lesson.
