WORKSHOP
The objective of this interactive, non-graphic workshop is to teach the universal lessons of the Holocaust. At once ordinary and extraordinary, this is the story of real people trying to escape Germany. Nazi laws and historical events, enlarged and projected, are used to provide historical context and demonstrate the progressive, insidious nature of the "legal" processes that led to the death of millions and the destruction of Jewish life. Universal issues addressed include prejudice, indifference, greed, obedience, decision-making, responsibility and peer pressure. Over 3000 students and teachers have attended No Way Out workshops.

A Teaching Unit Women in Holocaust Literature
Materials from this book are reproduced
with permission of Yad Vashem—
The Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Rememberance Authority, 2000

This teaching unit on Holocaust Literature is from Yad Vashem. The program deals with the manner in which women are presented in Holocaust Literature. It is centered on a discussion of four works written by well-known authors who survived the Holocaust. The discussion ascribes central importance to the fact that the protagonists are women, and attempts to characterize the uniquely feminine aspects of each work, and the relationship between the women protagonists and the historical events. This unit is part of a growing trend which seeks to investigate women in the Holocaust and to understand the particular ways in which women coped with its horrors. (click here for more details)

A MOTHER'S SHOAH
The Holocaust Story of Susan Kaszas
Steven Kingsley, Publisher
NewMedia Publishing
(Posted to this site on May 15, 2000)

SYNOPSIS
by the author's son

I found my mother's diary letter among her belongings, upon her death in 1990. Reading about her survival in Auschwitz and as a slave laborer in a Nazi weapons plant made me cringe. One of the most foreboding images, stuck in my mind forever, comes from her very first paragraph:

"Something tells me that I'm about to write the longest letter of my life. To make matters a bit harder, I am not used to writing anymore. The last time I had a pencil in my hand was about nine months ago. Even then, the only thing I could use it for was to write my name down."

Can any one of us imagine not having even the smallest of a pencil for nine months, or not being allowed to write? Humiliated, tortured, kept in a herd and used as a slave, or worse? Survive it all and tell about it so simply yet eloquently?

I certainly couldn't, so I translated it and had our children, Judy and Mark edit, proofread and narrate it. Titled "A Mother's Shoah", it is the faithful translation of the original diary. Images of paintings from David Olere and of pages from the diary itself add visual impact. David Olere was a Sonderkommando in Auschwitz-Birkenau, who was made to cremate the dead bodies coming out of the gas chambers...

Our aim in publishing "A Motherís Shoah" is simple. We want to make sure that every one of us will stand up and say, when confronted with any kind of organized cruelty and inhumanity: Never again!
